How tall should a side gate be?

For security, as tall as the passage sensibly allows — usually 1.8m. Lower reads as decorative; a full-height close-boarded gate is a genuine deterrent.

Can you fit a proper lock?

Yes — key-operated long-throw locks that work from both sides are the usual choice, so the gate is secure without trapping you in the garden.

My passage is a strange width. Is that a problem?

No — most are. Side gates are made to measure, scribed to the brickwork where the walls lean, which they usually do.

Do you fix to the wall or use posts?

Sound brickwork is the best fixing there is, using resin anchors. Where the wall is poor or rendered we set a timber post against it instead.

Insurance asks for a lockable side gate — can you help?

Yes, that is a common driver for the job. A full-height gate with a key lock ticks the requirement; we can confirm the spec in writing on the invoice if your insurer wants it.
